After being on maternity leave for four months, I think I've reached a critical point. I'm finally getting just enough sleep to have a decent amount of energy and I've been cooped up in the house long enough to be getting REALLY sick and tired of the clutter and disorganization. I call them trouble spots. Where the clutter is tucked away and I only deal with it when I have to find something. Here's a perfect example. The den.
My intent is to turn this into an area where Oliver can play and I can keep all his baby stuff contained in one space on the first floor. I've made some progress with the rug and moving the storage bins to the right hand side. Further down the line, we want to do a magnetic chalkboard wall on the left and add a little table and chairs for colouring, etc.
In the meantime, the shelves and bins have been a dumping ground. See examples A and B.
We have so much stuff and it's just weighing me down. I want to overall live more minimally, instead of expanding to fill every bit of our house with stuff, which we've been well on the way of doing. My favourite spaces are ones with room to breathe and I feel like that could be our house, if only we had half the junk that's in it.
So this is my goal. I have eight more months of leave. Starting now, I'm tackling the trouble spots. It's going to take awhile, but I've got the time. And I'm getting the motivation, through shear frustration at my inability to find things quickly. Here's my list of spots:
--- Bins and shelves in den
--- Drawers in kitchen
--- Closet in master bedroom
--- Storage room
--- Utility room
--- Beauty products in guest bathroom
My plan of attack is to sort out everything that we currently use. Put that aside to be organized. Everything else is going into trash bags to be donated or thrown out. As a reward for going through each spot, I'm going to treat myself to new bins and nice organizational supplies once I figure out how best to treat the items. For example, excess cords and chargers that we still use and need, I'll try to thoughtfully decide on a good way to organize them so they go back to the same place every time.
